Choices Articles

Life is a matter of making choices. Some choices we make are well though out, while others are spur of the moment, impulsive decisions.

Impulse buying can be a real problem for consumers especially if no thought is given to the consequences of making that purchase later on. The biggest consequence is a bill that cannot be paid off in full upon receipt, something that every consumer should keep in mind prior to selecting a credit card.

When it comes to choosing a particular credit card, you have a choice between Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover. Sure, smaller cards such as Diner's Club still exist, but your selection is likely to be made between one of the four mentioned brands.

Visa and MasterCard are the most alike in what they offer but American Express and Discover each have features that the first two are noted for including:

  • Grace periods which are usually of 25 days.

  • Cash advance options.

  • Rewards or other prizes for using their card.

  • No annual fee with certain versions of their cards.

American Express is considered to be the most prestigious of the four cards although that is also changing as the others have upscale or "platinum" versions of their cards available. Most are widely accepted, although Visa and MasterCard are as close to being universally accepted worldwide than the other two.

Regardless of which card you opt for, choose one that enhances your lifestyle through rewards, payment options, internet accessibility, and more. Perhaps two or three credit cards would be the best choice for the different ways that you plan on using them.
